Overview

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Professional Certificate Program and the TESOL Methodology Professional Sequence Award are exciting, practical introductory approaches to English language teaching. The curriculum reflects careful study and consideration of today’s theory and its practical application in this field. Our goal is to offer the most up-to-date and effective instruction in English as a second and foreign language (ESL/EFL) teaching. Acceptance into this program depends on careful review of each individual’s background and qualifications, and the program coordinator’s approval. TESOL can be taken as an intensive program or on a courseby- course basis throughout the year.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One of the following test scores:
    • UCSB Extension English Language Program, Advanced Level 2, Exit Assessment 85
    • Institutional TOEFL® 575 (550 for PSA)
    • iBT TOEFL® 90 (85 for PSA)
    • TOEIC® 780 (750 for PSA)
    • STEP EIKEN, Grade 1

In addition, all international applicants will need to demonstrate an acceptable level of fluency in a personal interview.

Audience

The 10 unit TESOL Methodology Professional Sequence Award (PSA) is a classroom-based set of courses designed to introduce and discuss upto- date communicative language teaching techniques.

The PSA is appropriate for both practicing teachers and for aspiring teachers. The 16 unit TESOL Professional Certificate Program (PCP) includes the same curriculum as the PSA with an additional 6 units of teaching practicum work.

Note: Individual courses are open to students who wish to study specific subjects without pursuing the certificate.

Length

TESOL Professional Certificate Program: 16 units, 144 class hours
TESOL Methodology Professional Sequence Award: 10 units, 90 class hours

Result

The TESOL Professional Certificate Program helps teachers become familiar with the principles of effective ESL/EFL teaching, develop a broad range of practical skills, and demonstrate their ability to apply what they have learned in a real teaching context.
